360 blog from 2006

For the second time in two days I became involved in the problems of two young adults. One I volunteered, the other, I was asked to. It is a compliment, it is also serious business. When do young people turn into adults? Was it always so hard ? Or it is that we baby them, make their decisions for them and then one day say, "okay you are an adult"?

To climb the hill to adulthood is not an easy trip. This should be started long before they reach legal age. Even then it is not easy. Some are afraid to take that first step, without having someone nudge them. Some take off without a thought of what they want or where they are going. Others make a plan and start that climb slow and steady. Some reach the top without bruises, but the most of them wander a bit and learn the hard way.

Specially when the world around them is telling them what they should do. Should sex be for recreation? Should I drink to be liked, and then the drug pressure. How can I be different from my parent? ( that hasn't changed).

I would not like being young in this day, it was bad enough in the fifties, when we all thought there was happy ever after.

Best advice I can give is respect yourself or no one else will, make a plan,You might laugh at it in 10 years but for now try to follow it. Make sure you have job, even if it is Mac Donald's while you make the plan. If you are going to have sex, make it mean something with some one special and use protection, protection, protection. If you are going to drink, (try not to) do not set your glass down or if you do, do not drink out of it again . And Just say no to drugs, your kids will thank you. And believe me, life has better choices. Last but not least be true to yourself, you are the best friend you will ever have.
